Indonesian Cancer Foundation (ICF) was founded in Jakarta on 17 April 1977. It was established based on the dedication and concern of its founders, namely former Indonesian Vice President Dr. Mohamad Hatta, former Minister of Health Dr. G.A.Siwabessy, and fifteen other prominent individuals. ICF is a non-governmental organization with the purpose to support the Government of Indonesia in its efforts to fight cancer, by taking on promotional, preventive, as well as rehabilitative measures and supportive activities. These aims are based on concerns about the increase of cancer incidence and the high mortality rate as a result of advanced stages of the disease. After going through some initial hard times, ICF now has 26 chapters and 178 branches in different provinces and subprovinces. In February of 1986, ICF was accepted as a UICC associate member. Treatment is only scarcely available, due to which many women die unnecessarily. Early detection is vitally important and could keep the weakest, poorest and most vulnerable of women healthy and alive. So far the Female Cancer Program (FCP), in cooperation with the University of Indonesia, the Indonesian Cancer Foundation and several women's organizations, has been successfully introduced and the care has been transferred as much as possible to the local healthcare facilities.
