Studi Kasus : Kristalisasi Kristalisasi Ammonium Perklorat dengan Sistem PendinginanTerkontrol untuk Menghasilkan Kristal Berbentuk Kristal AP merupakan partikel solid pembentuk propelan komposit dengan komposisi terbesar, kandungannya dalam propelan berkisar 60-80%. Partikel AP berbentuk bulat secara tidak langsung memperbaiki unjuk kerja propelan. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan percobaan proses kristalisasi AP untuk menghasilkan kristal berbentuk bulat. Kristal AP berbentuk bulat lebih disukai dalam pembuatan propelan, karena bentuk partikel yang bulat lebih mudah dicampur membentuk padatan propelan. Setiap partikel akan mengisi rongga-rongga kosong satu dengan yang lain, sehingga porositas propelan semakin kecil. Semakin kecil porositas propelan, semakin padat propelan yang terbentuk, kecepatan pembakaran pun semakin merata. Dengan demikian partikel ber- bentuk bulat dapat meningkatkan efisiensi dalam proses pencetakan propelan padat yang mampu meningkatkan kinerja motor roket. AP merupakan kristal tidak berwarna, dengan densitas 1,95 g/cc index refraksi kristal 1,4824 dan 1,4868. Refraksi molar 17,22. Dihasilkan dari reaksi pertukaran ion antara sodium perklorat dengan ammonium klorida, dan dikristalkan dari air sebagai garam anhidrat (Schumacher, 1960). Proses pembuatan kristal AP ber- bentuk bulat dengan sistem pendinginan terkontrol menghasilkan kristal AP ber- ukuran 40 Mesh sebanyak 45,42 kg, dan ukuran 20 Mesh sebanyak 0,03 kg. Sehingga total kristal yang diperoleh sebanyak 45,45 kg, dengan rendemen sebesar 39,71%. Melalui metode analisis berbasis ion menggunakan HPLC, ke- murnian kristal yang dihasilkan sebesar 99,67%. Jika dibandingkan dengan kristal AP yang selama ini diproses di laboratorium Lapan, menggunakan metode sistem pendinginan “alamiah,” terlihat perbedaan bentuk kristal yang signifikan. Kristal dengan sistem pendinginan terkontrol ini lebih mengarah ke bentuk bulat, seperti terlihat pada Gambar 1-1. 3 4 Gambar 1-1:(a) Kristal AP dengan sistem pendinginan terkontrol; (b) Kristal AP dengan sistem pendinginan “alamiah” (gambar diperoleh dari pengamatan melalui mikroskop dengan perbesaran 100x). 5 Percobaan kristalisasi ini AP dilakukan secara batch, hal ini berdasarkan pertimbangan ekonomis. Untuk reaktor yang beroperasi dengan kapasitas lebih kecil dari 500 kg/jam, kristalizer batch lebih ekonomis dibandingkan dengan yang kontinyu. Pada percobaan ini larutan jenuh dalam kondisi panas diumpankan ke dalam kristalizer yang dilengkapi dengan pengaduk dan koil pendingin. Supersaturasi terjadi segera setelah pendinginan dimulai, yang akan diikuti dengan nukleasi dan pertumbuhan kristal, sampai pada akhirnya supersaturasi akan turun. CSD produk sangat dipengaruhi oleh profil supersaturasi, sehingga laju pendinginan menjadi sesuatu yang sangat kritis. 6 Gambar 1-2: Kelarutan AP (AP) murni dan sodium klorida (SK) murni dalam air pada berbagai temperatur 7 Pada percobaan ini sistem pendingin menggunakan 2 (dua) jenis coolant, yaitu air pendingin (30°C) dan ethylene glycol (-27°C). Penggunaan dua jenis coolant ini dimaksudkan untuk mengatur laju pendinginan agar sistem tetap berada dalam zona metastabil. Pada percobaan ini, impuritas juga dimini- malisasi dengan adanya pelarutan kembali kristal yang terbentuk melalui sirkulasi dari reaktor kristalizer ke heating chamber selama proses pendinginan berlangsung. Melalui sirkulasi, sudut- sudut yang terbentuk oleh adanya impu- ritas dapat terkikis. Dengan demikian selain menghasilkan bentuk kristal yang mendekati bulat, proses ini mampu menghasilkan kristal dengan kemurnian cukup tinggi, yaitu 99,67% tanpa perlu dilakukan rekristalisasi. 9 Pada percobaain ini, laju pendinginan yang tidak optimum pada sistem pendinginan terkontrol yang disertai sirkulasi, dapat mengakibatkan minimnya jumlah kristal yang terbentuk. Hal ini dikarenakan, pendinginan lambat di awal batch meminimalisasi jumlah inti kristal yang terbentuk, sementara kristal yang terbentuk sebagian akan larut saat sirkulasi berlangsung. Kondisi ini cenderung mengakibatkan rendemen (sisa) yang dihasilkan pada percobaan ini relatif kecil, yaitu 39,71%. 10 KESIMPULAN : Kristalisasi AP dengan sistem pendingin terkontrol memiliki beberapa kelebihan dibanding kristalisasi dengan sistem pendinginan secara “alamiah”. Di antaranya, mampu mengontrol proses nukleasi primer sehingga dihasilkan kristal berbentuk mendekati bulat, kemurnian yang diperoleh cukup tinggi yaitu 99,67% tanpa perlu rekristalisasi, CSD yang terbentuk sangat sempit, ukuran kristal yang terbentuk hampir seragam yaitu sebesar 40 Mesh. Oleh karena rendemen yang di- hasilkan masih relatif kecil, yaitu 39,71%, maka pada penelitian lanjutan akan diteliti pengaruh kecepatan pendinginan serta waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk pendinginan terhadap rendemen dan ukuran kristal sehingga diperoleh kondisi optimum untuk menghasilkan rendemen mencapai 85% dengan variasi ukuran kristal yang diinginkan. 11 Instructions for use EDIT IN GOOGLE SLIDES EDIT IN POWERPOINT® Click on the button under the presentation preview that says "Use as Google Slides Theme".
