Do Video Games Inspire Violent Behavior?
According to the article “Do Video Games Inspire Violent Behavior?” by Greg
Toppo on July 1, 2015 in Stientific American websites that there is no clear explanation
of the relationship between violent video games and violent behavior. As he said ”The
truth is that decades of research have turned up no reliable causal link between playing
violent video games and perpetrating actual violence. This is not to say that games
have no effect. They're built to have an effect. It's just not necessarily the one that most
people think”. I think the violent video game contributed a large negative influence on
the behavior of the players and the reason will be explained.
Someone who plays pro-social games tends to be more sensitive to goodness
than those who play violent games. I agree with the author of this article. That is true
based on a 2010 experiment, Tobias Greitemeyer at the University of Sussex in
England and Silvia Osswald of Ludwig Maximilian University in Germany asked
subjects to play one of three video games—either a “prosocial” game, an “aggressive”
game or the “neutral” game Tetris. After eight minutes, an experimenter reached for a
stack of questionnaires but “accidentally” knocked a cup of pencils off the table and
onto the floor. Participants who had played the prosocial game were twice as likely to
help pick up the pencils as those who played the neutral or aggressive game. In my
experience, they can be analogous, pro-social games as good behavior and violence
games as bad. People who concern themselves with goodness will be easier to do good
to others than people who engage in a lot of bad behavior. It can be concluded that
video games do indeed influence the behavior of the players. For violent games the
effects of bad behavior and prosocial games will have a socially sensitive effect.
Psychology at the Malikussaleh University School of Medicine, Rahmia Dewi said,
addiction to playing online games is a behavior when gamers (players) begin to
experience satisfaction, then they will continue to repeat it so that it affects
psychologically. If the game is done repeatedly, the effect will be addictive and will
depend on the game. so, it affects their social life, "he told. He continued, online game
addiction is not much different from drug addiction, because of its impact, those who
have started to become addicted will go away from their social even they tend to be
alone. "People who used to love to be social when they started to get addicted to this
game will be isolated and go away from the crowd and focus on the game," he said
(Sarina. 2019).
More and more users of violent games, people will be busy with the game so that
the level of violence can go down but their social life will be disturbed. I agree with the
author of this article. That is true based in a 2011 analysis of game sales from 2004 to
2008, A. Scott Cunningham of Baylor University, Benjamin Engelsttter of the Center
for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany, and Michael R. Ward of
the University of Texas at Arlington found that higher rates of violent game sales
actually coincided with a drop in crimes, especially violent crimes. They concluded that
any negative behavioral effects playing violent games might have are more than offset
because violent people are drawn to such games, and the more they play, the less time
they have for crime but social life will be disturbed. In my experience, if you have fun
playing the game, you can forget the time. In other source say, those who are already
addicted to games can cause them to forget to eat and forget the time to cope with
other life needs (Labada, Josua. 2019). This is clearly disturbing someone's life
indirectly. Because as we already know that humans cannot live alone.
The author said on the article, if a violent game used in the right setting, the
game could actually serve as a diagnostic tool. I agree with the author of this article.
Because In a 2008 survey on the gaming habits of about 2,500 young people, Gentile
and his father, psychologist J. Ronald Gentile, found that children and adolescents
who played more violent games were more possible to report “aggressive cognitions
and behaviors.” They concluded that violent video games “appear to be exemplary
teachers of aggression.” But in my experience that only happens for a small group of
people cannot represent as a whole. In other source, an important role in monitoring
the child's development in the hands of parents. But, Usually one of the reasons
parents are his time is not much and his work is enough to take. So, children and
parents must work together if they want to benefit from the game but not all parents
have the time for it
The conclusion is that video games can influence a person's behavior depending
on how they are viewed. If he views it only as a game, it can become entertainment.
But if those people are affected by their negative values, it can become dangerous
because negative effect from violent video games can endanger the public. Also their
parents should have time,affection, and attention intensively to their children. So, the
children attitude still can under-control from things that are not good.
