UNIT 8 : WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Animal Extinction and How It Could Have Been Prevented
Many animal species have become extinct because of human activities and
changes in their environment. People hunted animals too much, destroyed forests,
and introduced foreign species into new habitats. These actions made it difficult
for animals to survive. For example, the passenger pigeon disappeared partly
because people hunted it in large numbers. Governments should have introduced
stricter hunting laws before its population became too small. People could have
protected its nesting areas and controlled hunting more carefully.
The dodo also became extinct after humans arrived in Mauritius. Settlers
hunted dodos and brought non-native animals that damaged their habitat. They
might not have understood how strongly these actions could affect the island’s
ecosystem. However, they should have protected the dodo and its environment
earlier. More generally, governments and communities should have balanced
economic development with nature conservation. They could have created
protected areas, educated people about wildlife, and stopped illegal hunting.
Scientists might have helped by warning the public about endangered species
sooner. Although we cannot bring these birds back, their extinction could have
been prevented with better decisions. Humans must learn from these mistakes to
protect animals that are still alive today.
