The thought of a car a truck that can
drive itself is at once both exciting and
frightening Autonomous vehicle navigation.
as the technology is known, may make life
more convenient if it allows people to kick
back and enjoy a good bock or movie while
their cars guide themself through rush hour traffic - hour traffic. However, what
happens if it start to rain or if traffic suddenly picks up?
If the technology is to work at all it will
have to be completely safe on all road, under
all speeds and in all weather. There in line
the challenge: if cars and trucks are to drive
autonomously. they will need futuristic sensor and advanced computing capabilities to
respond to ever - changing road condition.
Perhaps the most extreme example of
ever - changing condition is a war zone,
where roads may be reduced to rubble and
vehicles are natural target of attack. Rolling
out fleet of sell - navigating vehicles for the
military is enticing idea because it could keep
thousands of troops out of harm's way.
Nevertheless, will it be possible for these
vehicles to operate in war zone?. This question was the inspiration for a recent Defense
Advanced Research Project Agency
(DARPA) contest aimed at spurring the development of such tehcnologies.
Held at a former air force be in Victorville, Calf, in late 2007, the DARPA Urban
Challenge offered a $5,5 million purse to
competitors who could design the fastest
and safest vehicles that could traverse a 60 mile urban course in moving in less than six
hours. The contestant vehicles were unmanned and had to complete a simulated
military supply mission, maneuvering
through a mock city environment, avoiding
obstacle: merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, and negotiating interactions - all while conforming to California
driving rules. Of the 89 international teams
halaman 1
that entered the challenge, only six finished
in the allowed time.
Wende Zhang of General Motors was
part of the team that designed the winning
vehicle, which finished with the fastest time an average speed of approximately 13 miles
per hour. The GM team drew upon existing
technology already offered in some of their
vehicles that can assist in parking of detect
lane markers and trigger alarms if the driver
are coming too close to the shoulder of the
road. For the DARPA challenge, they developed a more sophisticated package of sensors that included GPS coupled with a camera and a laser - ranging UDAR system to
guide and correct the vehicle’s route, which
helped them win the challenge.
Though the won, people should not look
for robotic chauffeurs immediately. The
technology must prove reliable in many deferent road weather and lighting condition.
Still, says Zhang, a commercially - viable
autonmous driving product may be available
in the next dace.

This text is for questions 46 to 47
You have invited your friend over for
dinner. Your child sees your friend reach for
some cookies and says, “Better not take
those, or you’ll get even bigger.” You’re embarrassed that your child could speak to so
rudely. However, you should consider that

appropriately in social situations and did not
mean harm by the comment. An individual
may say words clearly and use long, complex

have a communication problems - if he or

have difficulty with pragmatics, for example,
as a result of a brain injury or stroke. An
individual with pragmatics problems may say
inappropriate or unrelated things during conversations, tell stories n a disorganized way,
or have little variety in language use. It is not
unusual children o have pragmatics problems
in only a few situations. However, if problems in social language use occur often and
seem inappropriate considering the child’s
age, a pragmatics disorder may exist. Pragmatic disorder often coexist with other language problems such as vocabulary development of grammar.
