VI ABSTRAK Dalam konteks urban, bangunan tinggi multi fungsi, dikenal dengan istilah "mixed-use building" adalah suatu bangunan yang mengakomodasi beberapa fungsi sekaligus, umum-nya fasilitas komersial yang meliputi mall, per-kantoran. perbankan, perhotelan, kondominium, apartemen, rekreasi, auditorium, sineplex, studio radio/TV, ruang observasi dan restoran, parkir. Kesemua fungsi tadi disusun secara vertical dalam wujud suatu bangunan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidup manusia, menciptakan citra (image) dan identitas spesifik serta integrasi maksimal semua elemen system dalam bangunan. Kota Medan memiliki potensi yang kuat untuk menyelenggarakan konvensi dan eksibisi yang berskala nasional bahkan berskala internasional. Meskipun begitu Kota Medan memiliki keterbatasan untuk meningkatkan pembangunan bangunan-bangunan yang berhubungan dengan kegiatan-kegiatan untuk masyarakat Kota Medan maupun kegiatan yang berskala internasional seperti pertemuan dalam negeri maupun luar negeri, eksibisi , dan lain-lain. Untuk menyelesaikan berbagai permasalahan yang akan dihadapi dalam proses perencanaan dan perancangan dilakukan dengan berbagai pendekatan desain yaitu studi literartur, studi lapangan, studi banding. Studi literatur mempelajari pemahaman mengenai pengertian dan teknis perncangan dan mencari contoh-contoh kasus sejenis. Setelah itu melakukan pencarian data yang bersifat teoritis, seperti standar dan karakteristik kasus perancangan untuk kemudian dipakai sebagai acuan dalam perancangan. Studi Lapangan melakukan analisis terhadap kondisi dan potensi tapak. dan terhadap kondisi lingkungan sekitar tapak. Studi Banding membuat analisis terhadap hasil studi banding denga cara mempelajari karakteristik dari masing-masing fasilitas segai bahan perbandingan untuk proses perancangan. Hasil desain berupa sebuah rancangan baru yang menggabungkan fungsi convention dan leisure. Kedua fungsi menghasilkan harmoni yang bagus karena memilki satu tujuan atau raget engunjung yaitu pebisnis. Desain façade sendiri menggunakan tema arsitektur tropis karena dengan menggunakan tema tropis yang memang cocok dengan negara Indonesia yang pada dasarya adalah negara tropis , bentuk façade sendiri juga memiliki ciri khas tersendiri berbeda dengan convention di luar negeri yang didominasi oleh façade kaca. Standar dari convention sendiri menggunakan standar internasional. Tantangan yang paling besar adalah menghasilkan desain yang lebih bagus dari Tiara Convention karena Tiara sendiri dari segi desain sudah sangat sempurna. Satusatunya kekurangan Tiara adalah bahwa usia bangunan sudah sangat tua dan karena didesain bertahun-tahun lalu maka ada beberapa aspek yang sudah tidak sesuai dengan keadaan sekarang. Salah satu contoh adalah jumlah mobil pada zaman dahulu tidak begitu banyak sehingga tidak disediakan jumlah parkir yang cukup banyak. Akibatnya pada waktu sekarang banyak mobil parkir di pinggir jalan sehingga banyak menimbulkan kemacetan. Kata Kunci : Urban , Medan , Convention VII ABSTRACT In the urban context, multi-function high-rise buildings, known as "mixed-use building" is a building that accommodates several functions at once, usually commercial facilities that include malls, offices. banking, hotels, condominiums, apartments, recreation, auditorium, sineplex, studio radio / TV, an observation room and a restaurant, parking. All of the function was arranged vertically in the form of a building to meet the needs of human life, creating an image (image) and the specific identity and maximum integration of all elements of the system in the building. Medan has a strong potential to host large-scale conventions and exhibitions of national and even international scale. Despite that Medan has limitations to enhance the development of buildings associated with activities for people of Medan and international activities such as meetings in the country and abroad, exhibitions, and others. To resolve the various problems to be faced in the process of planning and designing is done by a variety of design approaches that literartur studies, field studies, comparative studies. The study of literature study and understanding of the meaning and technical understanding and seek examples of similar cases. After that data search that is theoretical, such as standards and characteristics of the design cases for later use as a reference in the design. Field studies conducted an analysis of the condition and potential of the site and to the environmental conditions around the site. Comparative study makes an analysis of the results of a comparative study premises by studying the characteristics of each facility segai comparative material for the design process. Design results in the form of a new design that combines the functions of convention and leisure. Both functions generate a great harmony because it has one purpose or target such as businessmen. Façade design itself uses the theme of tropical architecture because by using tropical theme which is compatible with the Indonesian state which basically is a tropical country, the shape of the façade itself also has its own characteristics different from overseas convention dominated by the glass façade. The standard of the convention itself using international standards. The biggest challenge is to produce a better design of the Tiara Convention because Tiara itself in terms of the design is very perfect. The only drawback Tiara is that the age of the building is very old and therefore was designed many years ago then there are some aspects that are not compatible with the present circumstances. For example is the number of cars in past time was not that much as is not provided sufficient amount of parking lot.
