SENATE STANDING COMMITTEE ON LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION SERVICE Question No. 47 Senator Cash asked the following question at the hearing on 16 October 2012: 1. Can you provide a breakdown of the number of SIEVs and IMAs by province of embarkation in Indonesia for 2011/12, 2010/11 and 2009/10? 2. Can you provide a breakdown of the number of SIEVs and IMAs by province of embarkation in Sri Lanka for 2011/12, 2010/11 and 2009/10? The answer to the honourable senator’s question is as follows: Customs and Border Protection often receives information about maritime people smuggling venture embarkation locations from a range of sources, including irregular maritime arrivals during immigration processing. This information has at times proven accurate and other times it has not. The following information contains possible provinces used for departures by suspected irregular entry vessels that arrived from Indonesia and Sri Lanka during the financial years 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12. The below information refers to province or location of embarkation where that information has been collected; otherwise an assessed region of location. 2011/12 Financial Year Province Bali Banten Central Java East Java East Nusa Tenggara Jakarta North Maluku South East Sulawesi South Sulawesi West Java West Nusa Tenggara Yogyakarta Bati Dogu Guney Kuzey Kuzey Bati 2010/11 Financial Year Province INDONESIA Number of IMAs 145 411 633 989 89 605 43 217 219 2986 409 119 Number of SIEVs 3 5 7 16 2 6 1 6 4 31 8 2 SRI LANKA 582 311 40 27 62 8 6 1 1 1 INDONESIA Number of IMAs Number of SIEVs Bali Banten Central Java East Java East Nusa Tenggara Jakarta Lampung North Sumatra South East Sulawesi South Sulawesi West Irian Papoazia West Java West Nusa Tenggara Yogyakarta 90 62 495 1287 181 296 71 81 428 105 37 1181 142 34 1 1 11 23 5 4 1 1 9 2 1 20 4 1 Province Bali Central Java East Java East Nusa Tenggara East Sulawesi Jakarta South East Sulawesi South Sulawesi West Java West Nusa Tenggara West Sumatra Yogyakarta INDONESIA Number of IMAs 149 203 1373 341 13 52 265 668 836 436 178 51 Number of SIEVs 3 3 30 13 1 1 10 16 13 10 3 1 Bati Dogu SRI LANKA 142 75 3 2 2009/10 Financial Year
