Other Activities
Prior to my return to Indonesia, I was active in the Indonesian Melbourne Discussion
Group at the University of Melbourne coordinated by Prof. Arief Budiman, Head of the
Department of Indonesian Studies. I was also active in several radio interview and talk
show on Indonesian Current Political Affairs broadcast on SBS, ABC, and Triple J radio.
Meanwhile, as Executive Director of the International Center for Islam and Pluralism, I
have been active in some activities related to promoteing the ideas of moderate and
progressive liberal Islam through public advocacy, press interviews, seminars, radio and
television talk shows, and others. The purpose of such activities is to protect Indonesian
Muslims from the influence and propaganda of radical Islamic groups. It is obvious that
the radical Islamic groups have been developing their own strong networks and linkages
regionally and internationally. To counter the radical Islamic groups’ activities, I and my
colleagues at ICIP have also set up activities such as seminars, discussions, research,
visiting scholars, NGO exchange programs, publications, and other activities (see our
website www.icipglobal.org). I have been interviewed by local and international
newspapers/magazines (Washington Post, Associated Press, Time Magazine, Asahi
Shimbun, Jordan Times, Far Eastern Economic Review, The Wall Street Journal,
Bernama, Der Spiegel, etc) radio, and television stations (Channel News Asia, ABC
Australia, BBC London, etc) concerning issues related to Islam and democracy,
pluralism, religious radicalism, political Islam and other issues.
