Biblical Environmental Stewardship for the Present
and the Future Generation
by : Robert Leonard Panie
Introduction
There are numerous references to our need to preserve the environment
in the Bible. As the Next Generation, we have a unique opportunity to
improve the world through protecting the environment. In this essay,
we’ll examine biblical environmental stewardship and consider how we
may apply it to our everyday lives.
What is environmental stewardship?
The responsible management of the planet’s resources is referred to as
stewardship of the environment. It is necessary to take proper care of
the environment in order to protect it for future generations. Utilizing
what God has given us in a way that pleases Him and is beneficial to
others is the biblical definition of stewardship.
Biblical guidelines for environmental responsibility
The planet and everything on it were made by God, the Bible claims
(Genesis 1:1–31). God is the Creator, and He has entrusted the care of
everything to us (Psalm 24:1–2). We have an obligation to look after the
environment and utilize its resources sensibly.
In Genesis 2:15, God assigned Adam the responsibility of looking after
and maintaining the garden. This suggests that Adam was given the
responsibility of looking after the earth and using its resources wisely
for the benefit of all. We’re all supposed to follow this directive, not just
Adam. We have a duty to look after the environment and take good care
of the land.
According to the Bible, the globe is the Lord’s, and we have a
responsibility to care for it (Psalm 24:1–2). Psalm 104 demonstrates that
God cares for His creation and provides for all living things. He provides
greenery for the birds, water for the animals, and sustenance for all
living things. As custodians of the ecosystem, we have an obligation to
behave similarly.
Biblical principles for protecting the environment
There are many biblical principles that we can use in our daily lives as
we work to be good stewards of the environment.
1. Respecting all of God’s creation
God created everything, and everything He created is valuable. As good
stewards of the earth, we should revere and cherish all of God’s creation.
This also includes plants, water, and air in addition to animals.
2. Responsibility
We have a responsibility to protect the environment and its resources.
This calls for reducing waste, recycling when possible, and conserving
resources. We also need to think about how our actions will affect the
environment.
3. Gratitude
We should be grateful for the wealth the planet has to offer. According
to Psalm 24:1, the Lord owns the earth and everything on it, as well as
the world and everyone who lives in it. We shouldn’t take the
environment for granted; instead, we should be thankful for what God
has supplied.
4. Humility
We should approach our obligations as planet stewards in a humble
manner. Rather than being the land’s owners, we are its guardians. God
has placed a great responsibility on our shoulders, and we should try to
fulfill that responsibility in a way that honors God.
5. Collaboration
We are not operating alone in our attempts to save the environment. We
should work with others in order to create a positive impact on the world
around us. Working with others in our churches, communities, and
educational institutions is another aspect of this.
How to practice environmental stewardship in a real-world
setting?
Environmental stewardship should be practiced by the next generation
since it will help to protect the environment and maintain sustainability.
In this essay, we’ll go over some practical tips for environmental
stewardship.
There are a variety of practical methods that we might practice
environmental stewardship in our daily lives. Here are a few ideas:
1. Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling
One of the best methods to practice environmental stewardship is to
reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reducing the number of resources we use
when we don’t need to, reusing resources instead of throwing them
away, and recycling things instead of throwing them away are all
examples of reduction. Utilizing reusable water bottles and bags in place
of disposable ones, turning off lights and electronics when not in use,
and utilizing public transportation or carpooling as opposed to solo
driving are all ways that may practice minimizing.
2. Use energy-efficient appliances
Another illustration of environmental stewardship is the use of energyefficient appliances. We should purchase energy-saving appliances like
LED lighting, energy-efficient refrigerators, and energy-efficient
washing machines. These devices can reduce your electricity costs and
have a smaller carbon effect.
3. Participate in community cleanups
Participating in neighborhood clean-ups is another effective way to
practice environmental stewardship. We are welcome to join
neighborhood groups that organize cleanup activities for parks, beaches,
and other public spaces. These cleanups not only help to keep the
environment clean but also increase public understanding of the need of
environmental stewardship.
4. Avoid using single-use plastics.
Single-use plastic straws, cutlery, and cups are bad for the environment.
We should show to care about the environment by choosing reusable
items over single-use plastics. For instance, people can carry their own
cutlery and use metal straws rather than plastic ones when dining out.
5. Support ecologically responsible businesses
Giving financial support to environmentally conscious businesses is
another way to practice environmental stewardship. We should to make
green purchases at nearby shops that carry reusable goods and organic
food. Additionally, they can support companies that use green
production techniques.
6. Become knowledgeable about environmental issues
Learning about environmental issues is another practical method to
show environmental care. Reading books, watching films, and going to
environmental conferences are all great ways to learn about
environmental problems and potential solutions. By becoming
knowledgeable about the subject, Present and Next Generation may
encourage environmental stewardship and encourage others to follow
suit.
Conclusion
Since environmental stewardship is an essential ability, it should be
practiced by both the current generation and the Next. By reducing,
reusing, and recycling, using energy-efficient appliances, taking part in
community clean-ups, planting trees and other vegetation, conserving
water, avoiding single-use plastics, supporting environmentally friendly
businesses, and learning about environmental issues, we can all
contribute to the preservation and sustainability of the environment.
