Stainless Steel Flanges- parts and types
Stainless steel flanges are pieces that allow joining/assembling two parts or components of a
pipe system, being able to disassemble without destroying any of the parts. These can be
provided as a separate or joined (welded) part from its manufacture to a valve, pump,
accessory, equipment, etc.
There are three ways to produce stainless steel flanges:
•
•
•
Forged (ASTM A-182), the most common, of greater mechanical performance.
Fused (ASTM A-351), are the so-called F / C, of less mechanical performance.
Sheet metal machining (ASTM A-240) or bars, special cases for local flat flange
machining
304 Stainless Steel Flanges are used in all their variants in the union of pipes, valves,
accessories, and equipment of the industry, especially petrochemicals, where the possibility
of combining rapid disarmament and joints that withstand high pressures is a need. Flanged
connections are usually in a conduit, spherical, wafer, globe, check, etc. valves.
There are various types of joints between flanges and Stainless Steel 316 Pipe Fittings.
These can be welded, threaded, or have no mechanical connection between the flange and
Stainless Steel 304 Pipe Fittings, as in the case of Lap Joint Flanges.

Flange types
The usual flange designs are:
•

•
Welding neck flanges (WN - Welding Neck)
Sliding flanges (SO - Slip-On)
Threaded flanges (TH - Threaded)
Flanges for sealing flap (LJ - Lap Joint)
Welding flanges seat (SW - Socket Welding)
Blind flanges (BL - Blind)

Weld Neck Flange
Weld neck Wphy 52 flanges are also usually known by their English name Welding Neck
Flange. They are characterized by having a long conical neck, the end of which is the same as
the diameter of the pipe on which the flange is to be mounted.
The end of the flange is butt welded with the pipe, in the same way that two pipe ends are
welded. This feature provides a practically constant area conduit, with no possibility of
producing turbulence in the circulating fluids.
The long neck, and the smooth transition of the thickness of the same, gives this type of Mild
Steel Flanges characteristics of strengths that make it suitable for use in sectors of pipes
subjected to bending stresses, the product of the expansions and contractions of the lines.
Flanges with welding seat
Welded seat flanges are also usually known by their English name, Socket Welding Flange.
They do not have a conical neck like the WN, but the pipe enters the flange until it rests on a
seat, which has the same internal diameter as the pipe, forming a smooth duct without
cavities.
A fillet weld achieves a connection between pipe and SW flange between the end of the pipe
and outside of the flange. This welding, being of the fillet type, cannot be inspected by
radiography but using the Magnetic Particles test and by the Penetrating Inks test. The 316
Stainless Steel Flanges require little longitudinal space in the line to be mounted.
