DR. NAFIS SADIK
THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL’S SPECIAL ENVOY
ON HIV/AIDS IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC
Dr. Nafis Sadik, a national of Pakistan, is Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General and his Special
Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific, with the rank of Under-Secretary-General. Educated at Loreto
College (Calcutta, India) she received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Dow Medical College (Karachi,
Pakistan). She served her internship in gynaecology and obstetrics at City Hospital in Baltimore,
Maryland, and completed studies at The Johns Hopkins University, and as a research fellow in physiology
at Queens University, (Kingston, Ontario, Canada). She was Pakistan's Director-General of the Central
Family Planning Council responsible for developing, preparing and evaluating the country’s health and
family planning programme as part of the nation’s development plan. In 1971, she joined the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) serving in various capacities until her appointment as its Executive
Director in 1987. Dr. Sadik retired in December 2000.
On her appointment, Dr. Sadik was one of the highest ranking women in the UN system and was the first
woman in the history of the United Nations, to be appointed to head one of its major voluntarily-funded
programmes. She is well-known for her dynamism and guiding force in the field of international maternal
and child health, reproductive and sexual health, including family planning.
Her many international awards and honours include her selection as the Laureate, in the individual
category, of the United Nations Population Award 2001, for her outstanding contribution to the awareness
of population issues; an award presented by His Excellency President Soeharto for her participation in
developing the family planning programme in Indonesia; an award from the Government of Pakistan for
her contribution in the field of medicine and the Bruno H. Schubert-Stiftung Prize, 1995, for her
outstanding and excellent contribution in the field of population.
In 2003, Dr. Sadik was designated as UNFPA’s Goodwill Ambassador for Obstetric Fistula. She served
as a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change, and
the Secretary-General’s High-Level Group on “Alliance of Civilizations”, whose work was recently
concluded. She is a Commissioner of the Global Commission on International Migration, a member of
the International Task Force on Global Public Goods, and a Trustee of International HIV/AIDS Alliance.
In addition, Dr. Sadik participates as a Board member of several international and national foundations.
Among them are the UN Foundation, Asia Society, the South Asian Human Development Centre
(Islamabad, Pakistan), Pathfinder International, The World Population Foundation and the International
Aids Alliance. She is the author of numerous publications in the areas of reproductive health and family,
population and development, women, and gender and development.
Dr. Sadik is married to Azhar Sadik, businessman (retired). They have three children and two adopted
children.

Dr. Nafis Sadik, berkebangsaan Pakistan, adalah Penasehat Khusus Sekjen PBB dan Utusan Khusus
untuk HIV/AIDS di Asia dan Pasifik, setingkat dengan Wakil Sekjen. Beliau mengenyam pendidikan di
Loreto College (Kalkuta, India) dan mendapat gelar Doktor dalam Ilmu Kedokteran dari Dow Medical
College (Karachi, Pakistan). Beliau menjadi pekerja magang di bidang ginekologi dan kebidanan di City
Hospital (Baltimore, Maryland), dan menyelesaikan studinya di Universitas John Hopkins, serta sebagai
peneliti bidang fisiologi di Universitas Queens (Kingston, Ontario, Kanada). Dr Sadik pernah menjabat
sebagai Direktur Jenderal Dewan Keluarga Bencana (KB) Pusat Pakistan yang bertanggung jawab atas
pembuatan, persiapan, dan evaluasi progam perencanaan kesehatan dan KB sebagai bagian dari
rencana pembangunan nasional di Pakistan. Pada tahun 1971, beliau bergabung dengan United
Nation’s Population Fund (UNFPA) dan menangani berbagai tugas sebelum kemudian ditunjuk sebagai
Direktur Eksekutif pada tahun 1987. Beliau pensiun pada bulan Desember 2000.
Dr. Sadik merupakan salah satu perempuan yang memiliki jabatan tertinggi di lingkungan PBB dan
merupakan perempuan pertama dalam sejarah PBB yang ditunjuk memimpin salah satu program utama
PBB yang didanai secara sukarela. Beliau dikenal dengan sifatnya yang dinamis dan kekuatannya untuk
memberikan pengarahan dibidang kesehatan ibu dan anak, kesehatan reproduksi dan seksual, termasuk
KB, ditataran internasional.
Dr. Sadik menerima berbagai penghargaan international, termasuk diantaranya adalah United Nation’s
Population Award tahun 2001 sebagai penerima penghargaan untuk kategori individu yang diberikan atas
sumbangsihnya yang luar biasa terhadap masalah kesadaran di bidang kependudukan; penghargaan
dari Presiden Suharto atas partisipasinya membuat program KB di Indonesia; penghargaan dari
pemerintah Pakistan atas sumbangsihnya di bidang kedokteran dan Bruno H. H. Schubert-Stiftung Prize
tahun 1995 atas sumbangsihnya yang laur biasa di bidang kependudukan.
Pada tahun 2003, Dr.Sadik ditunjuk sebagai Duta Khusus UNFPA untuk Obstetric Fistula. Beliau juga
pernah menjadi anggota “UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change,
dan Secretary-General’s High-Level Group on “Alliance of Civilizations” yang masa kerjanya baru
berakhir. Beliau adalah Komisaris di Global Commission on International Migration, anggota International
Task Force on Global Public Goods, dan Komisaris untuk International HIV/AIDS Alliance.
Selain itu, Dr. Sadik juga menjadi anggota dewan di beberapa yayasan internasional dan nasional,
diantaranya adalah UN Foundation, Asia Society, South Asian Human Development Centre (Islamabad,

Dr. Sadik telah menikah dengan seorang pengusaha bernama Azhar Sadik (pensiun). Mereka dikaruniai
tiga anak, dan dua anak adopsi.
