The events are considered newsworthy or important. It means if there is an important event that should be known by many people, then this event deserves news. Well, the news text is called the news item text. However, if there are events that people do not deserve, then they are not definitely worth to be news. FUNCTIONS OF NEWS ITEM TEXT To inform the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day. To inform readers or listeners about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important. To present information the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day. STRUCTURE NEWS ITEM TEXT 1. Main Events / Newsworthy event(s) 2. Elaboration / Background event(s) 3. But if it is a fact that until now still happen or still in the form of fact, then can use simple present tense. Explanation Text - Using simple present tense - Using abstract noun - Using passive voice - Using action verbs - Containing explanation of the process TEXT 1 A Warehouse at Police Headquarters in Semarang Exploded A bomb warehouse at the police headquarters in Semarang exploded around 07:00 am up to 08:00 am. 44 houses damaged and the head of Gegana was wounded because of the explosion. People heard the explosion three times. They thought that it was a tire explosion. The third explosion was the loudest. People went outside the house after the third explosion. The explosion happened in warehouse at the police headquarters in Semarang. The cause of the explosion is still mysterious. One of the people said that he thought that it was a tire explosion but the third was the loudest. Then, he runs out of the house to save his life. The head of the police said that the explosion happened around 07:00 am to 08:00 am. He added that the warehouse is the place to keep a variety of military bombs. The warehouse size is 6 x 6 meters. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. TEXT 2 Jakarta hit by deadly flooding The flooding, caused by days of heavy rain at Jakarta, has blocked roads and forced businesses in the capital to close. The governor of Jakarta has declared a state of emergency. He also said he was committed to making a "breakthrough" in efforts to tackle the flooding. Jakarta resident, Wildan, urged the government to do more to stop floods in future. "The dams are no longer sufficient to hold the water," he said. Yayat Supriatna, an urban planning expert, told the BBC that Jakarta's drainage system "is still the same as it was in the Dutch colonial era" and should be rebuilt. "The floods are caused by the failure to manage and sustain the rivers as water reservoirs. I suggest the governor dredge the rivers because if the rivers are deeper the better [the system] will function." The Jakarta Post said two of the people killed in the capital were children, aged 13 and two. State funds are available to help those affected by the flooding following the declaration of the state of emergency, which will remain in effect until 27 January. TEXT 3 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Pandemic Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
